The Show Must Go On:  How the Deaths of Lead Actors Have Affected Television Series

By Douglas Snauffer

McFarland & Co., Inc.

This book offers an in-depth look at some of television’s most popular series in their darkest hours – when a lead actor dies during production.  With interviews of more than 80 of television’s top actors, producers, and directors, the book examines how the deaths affected the shows on every level – from the networks to the studios to the soundstages to the private lives of the other performers – and chronicles the efforts to keep each show going without those stars.  Interviewees include David Chase, the elusive creator and producer of The Sopranos, who was intrigued by the idea for the book and who tells how he worked for two years with terminally ill Nancy Marchand on that show.
